Dan Marshall is one of the funniest writers I’ve ever read. And one of the kindest people I know. We met at USC film school when I read his memoir-in-progress, Home Is Burning, which is about his Sedaris-like family wittily and profanely dealing with his father’s terminal ALS illness. Over the years of my own father’s kidney disease and mental health decline, Dan tragicomically counseled me on my way to ‘the dead dad club’ and even contributed a 500-word piece intercut with a passage from James Joyce’s Ulysses for my own sometimes humorous, more experimental memoir This Book is the Longest Sentence Ever Written and Then Published. While he continues to ply his trade in Hollywood, working with comedic luminaries, he also writes a Substack about growing from a man child into a parent called Peter Pan Man Dan.
