Part 10 of The Shuffle Synchronicities Podscript 🎙📇 with Ray Padgett
begins now!
Dave
But, you know, people are, like, how are these, there's been empty seats probably irritating these people <laugh> Like if I was in the older mindset, too, like, if I had just been sitting there and seeing like empty seats for the first, like, three-quarters of the show, I'd be, like, Who the fuck are these people?
And so we walk in and, um, the song that comes on, you know, and thank you for indulging me here, Ray, but, uh, it's…
Dave
I've Made Up My Mind To Give Myself To You. And it's the song from the new album. I remember when I was getting tickets to show you were, like, you have to listen to the new album. Because that's, that's all he’s gonna play. He's just gonna play the new album.

Dave
And uh, that was my favorite song on that new album. I know it's a lot of people's favorite song too. And it kind of hit me in the way that I think it's supposed to. Pure music. Where you're not, like, when I go to concerts, I'll be like, Oh, my body is, is aching. Or this person is in my way. Or, like, This is not how I imagined it was gonna be played. Just kind of that frustration.

Dave
And that time when I heard the song, I think it was just like, this is exactly what [and] where, every moment is exactly where I’m supposed to be. This is the perfect place to be. Perfect sound. Perfect happening. How this is supposed to be happening is happening this way. And it felt like I was in a movie where, like, the soundtrack swells and it was the most real pure moment of music I've, I've ever experienced.
Bob Dylan
(That Night’s Live Recording)
Listening to the sound of, the sad guitars. I’ve been thinking it all over, and I've thought it all through. I've made up my mind, to give myself to you.
Dave
The rest of the show was like that. And kind of looking at that song. I looked at some of the music criticism behind that song and, I was feeling, I didn't really study this beforehand, but I was feeling what they said. Is that they’re saying it's a song about devotion. And it's on like three levels. It's a devotion to, you know, a romantic partner.
Bob Dylan
(That Night’s Live Recording)
I don't think, that anybody ever, else, ever knew. I've made up my mind, to give myself to you.
Dave
And there's devotion to the spiritual world.
Bob Dylan
(That Night’s Live Recording)
I preach the gospel, the gospel of love. A love, so real, a love so true. And I've made up my mind, to give myself to you.
Dave
And then there's devotion to, you know, the art, the community that he is giving, he's given his art to. Do you know that song? Pretty well? I mean, like, what's your feeling on that song?
Ray
Yeah. I mean, I know it well. He plays it every night. And I think there's another interpretation that some people I've seen have, which I kind of like, which is that, it's also a song to his audience.
Dave
Yes.
Ray
Like he's a guy who's been on tour, other than the pandemic, basically most of every year, for over 30 years now.
Dave
Wow.

Ray
He basically spends his life playing music for people in rooms like The Pantages.
Bob Dylan
(That Night’s Live Recording)
I'm giving myself to you, I am. From Salt Lake City to Birmingham. From East L.A. <cheers> to San Antone. I don't think I can bear to live my life alone.
Ray
Um, and so again, I don't, I can't, I don't know his intentions.
Dave
Yeah.
Ray
But I think that's a nice interpretation. That like on the surface you could say it's a love song, right? Fairly simple. Um, but, you know, give myself to you, thinking of the you as the audience, as the, as the fans.
Bob Dylan
(That Night’s Live Recording)
I’ve made up my mind, to give myself to you… <the audience claps and cheers>
Dave
Yeah. Because I think that's the thing that I was realizing while I was there, that those different levels was like, I've given myself to the spirit.
Bob Dylan
(That Night’s Live Recording)
Well, I hope that the Gods go easy, with me.
Dave
I did write about a person in my life, uh, in the Volume One. And so that was in my mind of like how I could treat them better.
Bob Dylan
(That Night’s Live Recording)
It just takes me a while to realize things.
Dave
And that was what made me take down the Substack was, I was like, Okay, reflecting on what I had written in that first year, there was too much about other people that were not me, without their consent.
Bob Dylan
(That Night’s Live Recording)
I’m not that I was, things aren’t what they were.
Dave
Like, if I'm really gonna give my mind or my, my, my Self to, not just this person, but to the spiritual world, and to the ethical world, that that involves. It was, like, human relationships are also art, you know? And that there's not something beyond. Hurting someone is not worth your art ever.
Bob Dylan
(That Night’s Live Recording)
Lot of people gone, lot of people I knew.
Dave
Your art is your life.
Dave
And so yeah, I just, I went home and I…
